CANTER

"Lil" oil on 6x8 RayMar
up for Adoption through CANTER/CALIF.

I have said many times, my vision was to go beyond shelter animals and one day incorporate other animal rescues and organizations.   CANTER is my first step toward that goal.  CANTER is the Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses.

Do you know what the common practice was for racehorses that were injured or were no longer at their peak?  View this NBC story to find out how CANTER came to be by clicking here.

California just formed a chapter in the Bay Area last year for the two nearby Race Tracks.  I approached the regional director and she kindly accepted my offer for a painting of one of the horses she rescued.  Lil is sweet and has been retrained ( out of her habit of running full speed and turning to the left) and is ready for adoption.   Each chapter of CANTER is fully staffed with volunteers and no one is paid for the wonderful work they do.

They are funded only by donations so every little bit helps.  They are struggling now to raise $5,000 it will take to feed and care for the horses they currently have.    This amount will only cover the year until July.

There are CANTER chapters throughout the country.  Perhaps you might be interested in doing something for them if there is one near you.   Check out their National website here.

  1. Beautiful painting, and another wonderful cause! It's disgusting and a disgrace to mankind how owners treat these horses (and greyhounds) when they are no longer profitable.

  2. It is sad. I was unaware myself. I had always thought they were put out to pasture to live their life chasing pretty mares. I guess that one happens to a very few.

  3. There always seems to be a lot of support for greyhounds, I never thought about the horses. It is a terrible shame. Well done for all that you do, and well done on the painting!

  7. You are bringing so many important issues to the forefront with your huge, loving heart. Thank you, Shelia! I already commented on your other site about the wonderful job you did on Canter's portrait but it bears saying again... What a gorgeous job you did! Love everything about it...esp. the strong rust color against the yellow background and that faint outline around the ears. Very painterly!

  10. Sheila- what a wonderful news clip about CANTER, and the good work people are doing all over the country to save these noble animals. Thanks for bringing these issues more to the forefront for all of us. I think the conditions of the racing and sporting industries is getting more scrutiny, thank goodness. As awareness builds, compassion grows, and changes are made. You are a bright light! :-)

  11. the portrait is beautiful. It's so upsetting the way animals are used and abused. Can't even think about or read about any animal abuse, factory farming, etc. etc. :(
