Bentley, by Koni Frazer

Bentley, by Koni Frazer

Koni Frazer, who describes herself as a self-taught artist, made this portrait in watercolor pencil. I've never heard of watercolor pencil, but sheesh, it looks great! I love the shine on Bentley's head.

Koni, who lives in Edgewood, Washington, makes paintings of nature, of birds and flowers and animals, all with a lovely color palette and beautiful detail. Her paintings make me smile and think of being in good places. Check out her blog, http://konifrazer.blogspot.com/

  3. Watercolor pencils have been around for a long time, but not a lot of people (at least that I know of) use them. You draw with them like a regular pencil or crayon, as lightly or heavily as you wish, putting colors on top of one another if you want. Then the magic happens when you apply water to them with a brush. They dissolve and blend together--and from the example of Bentley above, can turn out looking "doggone" good! You can also use them dry, for those detailed areas.
